Conventions of a Music Video

Andrew Goodwin in 1990 wrote dancing in the distraction factory which broke music videos down into easily definable features. He stated that most music videos shared similar characteristics or conventions that demonstrated how they were different from television programmes or films.

  • Discontinuity editing techniques are employed. Shots are repeated, narrative doesn't have to make sense and many different locations can be used to sell the artist to the song.
  • It is only usually the length of the song. Generally features no dialogue, just music.
  • A music video is a promotional tool for the artist therefore it features close ups designed to sell the artists star image.
  • Lip syncing is a key feature and is employed to sell the artists looks and image.
  • Lyrics tend to match visuals and cut to the beat of the song.
  • The male gaze is always employed in music videos to sexualise women.
  • Music videos play inter textual reference to other media products e.g. they are often influenced by films.
  • Scopophilia - The art of watching or being a voyeur

Bad Blood Analysis:

  • Through the use of the mirror popping up, we see a long shot of Taylor swift demonstrating the notion of scopophilia as we see her being watched through the mirror. Further notions of scopophilia are shown through her reflection in the shattered glass.
  • The use of the title and font in red is reminiscent of Pulp Fiction showing the inter textual reference points.
  • Close up to show male gaze and selling of her star image.
  • Sexualised shots of her - panning across her body to show semi nakedness
  • Shot changes to the beat when she says "hey".
  • slow motion, dissolves and jump cuts as well as split screen are used repetitively throughout.
  • Sword fighting cut to the beat.
  • She sings whilst shes acting - mixture of performance and narrative. Story going on around her.
  • Chorus = close ups of her to reinforce her star image as well as showing she is the one who is singing the song.
  • Lyrics match visuals when she is saying bad blood as fighting is happening., Shots change as punches are thrown.
  • Range of different locations are used to sell her star image including Taylor on bike, boxing ring, operating table and walking.
  • Pace of song slows down along with the amount of cuts
  • Inter textual references. Magnificent 7 + expendables. Charlies angels. Women walking out fire with gun.
  • Low angle - powerful.
